FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Reach for the Rainbow is happy to announce that the Ontario Trillium Foundation has awarded a significant Seed grant of $75,000 for the development of a pilot transition program for young adults in Ontario who are Reach for the Rainbow participants. Currently, inclusive programs are primarily directed towards children with disabilities between the ages of four and 22, with 27 per cent of the organization’s clients representing young adults above the age of 18. Individuals are served regardless of their disability, contingent only upon the availability of space.
“I am delighted that this grant will allow many Ontario children and young adults with disabilities, and their families, to benefit from the wide array of integrated and inclusive recreational services provided by Reach for the Rainbow. Our government remains committed to building and supporting inclusive and engaged communities, and I am very pleased to have this essential organization located in my riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore.”
– Peter Milczyn, MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore.
Funds from the grant will be used to help research and develop inclusive recreational opportunities for young adults with physical or developmental disabilities. The grant will help research and evaluation, host focus groups in various locations, create information materials and share the findings at the end of the pilot.
There are few inclusive recreational programs for those over the age of 22 in Ontario, which leads to a greater sense of social isolation and anxiety for those who have experienced supportive and integrated opportunities and environments in their formative years. Individuals with disabilities require more innovative, age-appropriate opportunities in order to participate in integrated activities.
“We are thrilled to be working with so many programs, agencies and organizations in the field of disability and accessibility”, said Executive Director Dawn MacDonald, “every individual, regardless of ability, has the right to inclusive recreation.”
As a core support and essential service to over 500 families in over 38 inclusive partner camps and recreational programs across Ontario, Reach for the Rainbow realizes that integrated opportunities allow for a greater quality of life and the ability to effectively engage within a given community.
